Bayesian SPC — Beyond the 3-Sigma Rule

Traditional SPC uses fixed 3-sigma control limits based on assumptions that often don't hold. Svend's Bayesian Process Belief System replaces these with posterior-driven monitoring that adapts to your data:

• Bayesian Cpk — Instead of a single number, get a full posterior distribution. Ask "What is the probability that Cpk exceeds 1.33?" and get a direct answer. No 1.5σ shift assumption needed. Try the free calculator.
• Adaptive control limits — Limits that shrink as data accumulates and your estimate of the process improves. More data means tighter bounds — not the same fixed lines forever.
• Online changepoint detection — Bayesian Online Changepoint Detection (BOCPD, Adams & MacKay 2007) identifies process shifts as they happen, observation by observation, without batch recomputation.
• Anytime-valid sequential testing — E-values (Grünwald et al. 2024) let you continuously monitor a test and stop whenever the evidence is strong enough. No penalty for "peeking" at the data.
• Bayesian DOE — Screen effects by P(practical significance) rather than p < 0.05. Compare models via exact marginal likelihood instead of AIC/BIC approximations. Run sequential experiments guided by information gain.
• Bayesian Gage R&R — Gibbs sampler produces posterior distributions for every variance component. Get P(%GRR < 10%) and credible intervals on NDC, not just point estimates. Sequential updating lets each new study inherit the prior from the last one.
• Decision-theoretic alarms — Set alarm thresholds based on the actual cost of missed shifts vs false alarms, not arbitrary significance levels.
